Someone Tell My Editor "NO!"
It's me, I'm my editor. Come tell me "no edit, only write"
On Tuesday, I started reading a new writing book: Wired for Story by Lisa Cron. And now I want to delete my first two chapters of my novella and start over.
But I’m not going to! I’m just going to keep going because the first draft is supposed to be shit. It’s supposed to be just telling yourself the story and then edit later. So for now, I am taking notes, underlining, annotating Wired for Story and will use it in my editing process.
In A Brown Study is a weekly newsletter about being a queer neurodivergent writer, my dark academia novella WIP, and things I'm currently obsessing over.
This week I
started reading The Priory of the Orange Tree with a read-along group on IG
watching Everything Everywhere All At Once with one of my dear friends
thought about doing laundry and then decided against it
received my Southern Gothic Oracle deck and it’s amazing
took many naps
received some upsetting news about a family member and cancer
Facetimed my niblings and miss them already
On My Reading Shelf
The Work Wife by Alison B. Hart - queer contemporary literary fiction set in Hollywood with a far reaching #MeToo tangled web that brings three different women together
The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones - a revenge horror story when Nature seeks justice against four Native American men on the fringe of society, already battling inner demons
The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon - queer epic fantasy with magic, lesbians and dragons, literally could not be more perfect. I saw it referred to as “the feminist fantasy I never had when I was young” and yes.
Two chapters done and I already want to go back and edit! Please send help. But seriously, it’s taking a lot to just keep going and not worry about it being perfect. I really want to share snippets, but will refrain from doing so because first drafts are not great.
However, that doesn’t mean I can’t share Vibes.
A coffee shop for insomniacs, fried sandwiches and black coffee, passing notes via the bartender, sapphic pining, If Looks Could Kill (in a sexy way and a murdery way), dark neon lighting.
I cannot wait to share more of my WIP with y’all. Also, I need to come up with a fun title for my WIP. Not necessarily The Title, but something fun to call it. Based upon the Vibes Above and knowing it’s Dark Academia, what would you call this project?
Until next time, dear heart
