For the Love of Shapeshifting
Best superpower, you can't change my mind
When I was younger, when asked what superpower I would most want I would say “invisibility” — because introvert, and if no one could see me, I could read all day and all night and on one could stop me. I thought this through, y’all.
Now if you ask me, it’s a whole hearted “SHAPESHIFTER!” — because queer and genderfluid.
Can you imagine the ability to able to shift your body to what feels best for the day? I want it. I want to be able to do it. It’s one of the reasons I’m so fascinated with drag. It’s a type of shapeshifting, I think. I love it.
And getting into drag is like getting into character, into a new form. Okay and now I’m thinking about why I love dance and theater. Because same.
I also wonder if I asked every person who loves shapeshifters, how many of them would be queer? And how many grew up obsessed with Greek mythology or Norse mythology (thinking about Zeus and Loki, obviously). And how many loved Mystique from X-Men (Hi, it’s me!)?
Shapeshifting as performance. Shapeshifting as protection. Shapeshifting as gender euphoria. Shapeshifting as pure fun.
All my fellow shapeshifters, say hi!
